Yoga Journal China Interviews Emma Balnaves

A master yogi from the Goraknath Temple in Nepal, Sri Ramkaranta Bhatta, reiterated a view that is widely shared among modern yoga schools, namely, that the teacher must teach to the unique interests and abilities of the student.  And that disciplined practice is essential to making real progress. He also commented on the relationship between personal health as a foundation for the peace and well-being of our communities and our world.

New documentary film sheds light on ancient yoga wisdom

In the Bay Area, yoga classes are ubiquitous, with an endless array of offerings for modern yogis. The hashtag #yoga can be found 44 million times on social media, and while the proliferation of yoga is, of course, wonderful, it’s westernization also points to a slow degeneration of original yogic traditions, which are more about inner essence than external form.

AGNIYOGANA ‘LOWER THE HEAD AND INVOKE THE FIRE’

Scott Blossom interviews Emma Balnaves about her upcoming film “Agniyogana” for Namarupa.

Over the last several years I have travelled to India and Nepal for research and filming. During that time I interviewed extraordinary people who shared their knowledge and practices with me and the film is structured around these conversations.  We learn from their personal experience what it takes to prepare for the path and the obstacles that are encountered.  In many cases these people  share rare and esoteric knowledge that is in danger of being lost. It was a privilege to speak with them.

Firmness Not Flexibility: The true potential of the yogic path

An article by Carole Migalka, @carole_migalka

Moving from external form to the inner essence is a goal shared by great masters of many traditions. To penetrate these similar aspects, Emma Balnaves researched traditional practices over many years and distant lands. From Shamanic initiations on the plains of the Gobi Desert to the cliff-hugging Tibetan Buddhist monasteries of Bhutan, practitioners were sought who had direct experience of the Yogic path rather than intellectual knowledge alone.

Control of fire is what makes us human, and yoking that fire judiciously is what permits us to transcend our human limitations. The many varieties of yoga all entail transmutation of our inner fire. As today’s world relentlessly commodifies everything it touches, including yoga, the need for reminders of what yoga really is, and how it can transform lives in our urban jungles, becomes ever more critical. Fortunately, as this film illustrates, genuine traditions still exist, and serious individuals still follow them, as can anyone who is willing to invest the time and energy to awaken and cultivate the fire within.

“Yoga can’t be bought or sold“. A simple truth, lost in a world of over two billion yoga students and almost as many yoga teachers. This film stands apart in that it allows the ancient traditions of yoga to speak for themselves. What a profound and wonderful voice it is, resounding with mystery, wisdom and power. The voice of yoga itself is so clear because the project has a rigorous academic objectivity, grounded in an equally rigorous yoga practice, a unique combination that gives authority & integrity to this film .
